Darcie's great great grandfather, Fritz R. Ruegsegger, came to America from Switzerland with his family in 1875 to pursue a career in winemaking. In 1883, Fritz's son and Darcie's great grandfather, Christian Ruegsegger, opened his own winery, the Alpine Winery, in St. Joseph, Missouri, which kept bond #62 in the United States. In addition to maintaining the vineyards and all the winemaking activities, Christian hand painted his own wine labels. The Alpine Winery bottled its last wine in 1945, when the tough times following the repeal of the Prohibition forced the family to shut down operations.
Darcie Kent is now proud to continue the family tradition as a fifth generation winemaker and winemaker who bears her name, Darcie Kent Vineyards. Like her great grandfather before her, Darcie uses her original art for her wine labels and tries to capture the special spirit of every vineyard and its owner, in her stunningly beautiful labels that grace every bottle.
Together with her husband David and her two daughters Kailyn and Amanda (sixth generation), Darcie Kent is committed to merging the terroir of the Livermore Valley with her artistry and passion to forge and maintain a world-class family-owned winery.
Founded in 1996, Darcie Kent Vineyards is a family-owned winery located in the Livermore Valley, east of San Francisco Bay. The fifth generation winemaker/artist Darcie Kent and the Hungarian-born winemaker Julian Halasz work together to design small lots, single vineyard wines from sustainably farmed, family-owned vineyards in Monterey and the Livermore Valley. In addition to the wines sold at the winery, Darcie Kent Vineyards has been steadily spreading to restaurants around the country over the last three years, so be sure to ask for Darcie Kent wines at your favorite restaurants.
At the beginning of 2013, Darcie and her family bought the Estate Winery and Vineyard, formerly the Cedar Mountain Winery, and began a state-of-the-art renovation. Now, all of them at Darcie Kent Vineyards are delighted to invite you to visit their new home at 7000 Tesla Road in the scenic Livermore Valley.
Virtually all of their wines are made from their 40 acre estate-farmed vineyards in the Mt. Diablo Highlands, east of San Francisco Bay, and part of the Central Coast and Livermore Valley AVAs.
Since the 2020 harvest, grapes from Monterey, such as Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc, have been grown exclusively by them. Their bottle-fermented glossy Grüner Veltliner is the only exception. Their vineyards are usually located on hillsides that have ideal drainage, cooling winds and ideal sunshine to match the grape variety.
Darcie Kent Vineyards is proud to be a member of the Certified California Sustainable Winegrowers list. The California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance (CSWA), a pioneer in the promotion of sustainable wine-growing practices within the California wine-growing community, operates this initiative for both vineyards and wineries.
