History
Broadway Plaza opened on 18 October 1951, with 38 stores. JCPenney, Sears, Woolworths, Joseph Magnin (later I. Mgnin), and a Lucky Supermarket were the main anchors of the mall. Capwell's department store in Oakland opened as the fifth center anchor in 1954. The second department store at Northern California's Bullock, sold to Nordstrom in 1984, replaced Lucky in 1973.
In 1979, Capwell was transformed into the Emporium-Capwell and in 1995, while I.Magnin was converted that year into a separate Macy's men's store. Neiman Marcus joined Broadway Plaza in March 2012 as the first of the major shopping malls. Projects for extensive mall renovations were approved in December 2013, including the addition of a new retail space of 300,000 sq ft (28,000 m2).
The expansion integrates all Macy's stores into an enlarged single building, replaces existing car parks with modern facilities and adds a new2-story retail building between existing Macy's and Nordstrom stores. The first tenants in development were opened in September 2016, while the New Tenants and a Zara store opened in place of the former Macy's Men's location during the Christmas shopping season. An additional phase was begun in early 2017 and opened at the end of 2018 to substitute two multi-lease buildings with an Apple flagship store.
Broadway Plaza has become a true shopping destination for many people in East Bay who seek medium to high-end clothing and unique shopping experiences. We have friends from Montclair, Piedmont and elsewhere who travel for improved options for 20 minutes. Macy's & Neiman Marcus and new tech experiences like Apple and Tesla with anchor stores like Nordstrom. It's a place to seek. Our favorite thing is to enjoy the many outdoor dining trendy restaurants.
