About The City Of Lafayette, California
With the establishment of the community’s first post office, the name “LaFayette” was born. Benjamin Shreve, the owner, and manager of a wayside hotel-general store (which faced today’s Lafayette Plaza) petitioned for a post office in the community in 1857, proposing the name Centerville at first. When told that a post office with that name already existed in California, Shreve suggested LaFayette, after a French general who became an American Revolutionary War hero (probably not because his wife was a native of Lafayette, Indiana). The first post office in LaFayette opened at 3535 Plaza Way, and Shreve served as the town’s first permanent postmaster for 30 years.
The city is part of the San Francisco Bay Area and has its own BART public transportation station. Lafayette is located between Walnut Creek, Moraga, and Orinda, and is referred to colloquially as “Lamorinda” in the latter two towns.

The Lafayette Elementary School District sold the Community Center to the city in 1983. Burton Elementary School used to be here. The Community Center has been protected and maintained through the development of rental processes and guidelines. They’ve taken special precautions as a municipally-owned building to ensure that no claims be filed against the City that would result in the cancellation of any City-run programs at the Community Center.
